Most sources agree that it's at least 2,000 years old, and some date it back to 5,000 years. However, it is agreed that this is the world's oldest dance form. Another mystery lies in how the art form came to be. One thing that we know for sure is that it was first used in religous ceremonies to prepare women for child birth. Belly Dance was passed from one generation to the next by women teaching each other. These specific rituals remained a mystery to men. It is also a mystery how Belly Dance endured the test of time, especially considering its religious opression. Despite persecution, it eventually became a revered art form displayed at public gatherings, such as weddings and concerts. Wanderers known as "Gypsies" carried the style from Middle Eastern countries into Europe. As a result, its influence was later seen in other dance forms such as Flamenco. The
term "Belly Dance" was coined in the US, and the form became
popular, as a result of a dancer known as "Little Egypt".
She performed at the 1893 Chicago World Fair. Until this period, the
dance was known as "Oriental Dance" or "Raks Sharki." Magic lies in the Journey, not in the Destination. The Labyrinthe Belly Dance Company takes its name from an ancient circular pattern found in cultures throughout the world. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has only one path that leads to a center and out again. Its shape, the circle, is a universal symbol of wholeness and unity. Its meandering path is a metaphor for the path of life.
The labyrinthe's use as a spiritual tool dates back to the 13th century,
when it was placed in the floors of gothic cathedrals in Europe. There
it was walked by Christian pilgrims as a symbolic pilgramage to Jeruselum.
This is where the roots of the labyrinth as a walking meditation are
found. More than being Mysterious and Magical, Belly Dance is a beautiful form of expression, be it for performance, fitness or both. The movements of Belly Dance include sensuous, snake-like movements, as well as, controlled isolations. These movements result in the following health benefits.
